Excerpts from Experts: Building a Tech Community Online with Marina Kim
At Vidatec, we believe in the power of people-first technology — and the people who build it. In this edition of Excerpts from Experts, we’re sharing insights from Marina Kim, Technical Lead at Vidatec and founder of CatBytes, an online community for women in tech.
Marina has spent years creating spaces where underrepresented voices in technology can connect, collaborate, and thrive. Through her journey with CatBytes, she’s seen first-hand how online communities can change careers — and lives.
“Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been in the industry for decades, finding a supportive community can be a game-changer,” Marina says. “It’s not just about networking — it’s about belonging.”
5 Tips to Build a Vibrant Tech Community
If you’re thinking about building a tech community of your own, here are Marina’s five tips to get started:
- Define your audience.
Every great community starts with a clear idea of who it’s for. Are you bringing together beginners, career-switchers, women in tech, or senior engineers? Understanding your audience’s shared challenges and goals helps shape everything from your messaging to the type of content and events you’ll offer.
- Clarify your mission.
What’s the heart of your community? Are you creating space for mentorship, fighting isolation, or amplifying diverse voices? A clear mission gives your community focus, energy, and purpose — and helps others see why they should get involved.
- Choose the right platform.
Meet your community where they already are. Whether it’s Discord, Slack, LinkedIn, or a simple newsletter, the right platform makes it easy for people to connect and engage. Bonus points if it’s mobile-friendly and easy to navigate.
- Spread the word.
Use the channels your audience already loves — LinkedIn, TikTok, Instagram, or even in-person meetups. Tell your story, share your mission, and let people know how they can get involved. Authenticity goes a long way.
- Keep the momentum going.
Consistency is key. Regular check-ins, events, shared resources, and small wins keep people engaged. Celebrate your members, create space for collaboration, and keep showing up — even when it’s quiet.
Building community, one connection at a time
“Great communities don’t just happen — they’re built with intention, passion, and people who care,” says Marina. “Start small, be consistent, and let it grow with you.”
At Vidatec, we’re proud to support leaders like Marina who are creating more inclusive, supportive, and vibrant spaces in tech. Whether you’re a developer, designer, or someone who just wants to make the digital world a little more human — there’s a place for you.
